Foster Parents in South Africa

The unique breed of Foster parents in South Africa have to manoeuvre through the intricate process of getting legal custody of children, tiptoe over the quicksand of visitation and interaction with the biological parents. They have to be willing to queue for hours being send from one end to another to obtain access to the trickle of government grants to help them keep these children clothed, fed, and taken for frequent doctor appointments and therapy. And at the same time they have to daily unconditionally support, love and try to earn trust from these children that have been scarred and hurt by other ‘Adults’ they have trusted…. but Foster parents in South Africa do so, because:
• ‘We do it for the children, and not for their parents!
• ‘Foster Care has eternal value in broken lives’
• ‘We feel called to make a difference’
• ‘We want to give hope and love to a child that lives in despair and neglect’
• ‘A life is truly only worth living if it is lived for others’
• ‘A successful life is not an easy life. It is built upon strong qualities such as: sacrifice, endeavour, loyalty, commitment and integrity’
• ‘We want to try our best to replace all the ugly and bad negatives in their lives, with positive ones’

About Helouise Steenkamp

I'm a 45 plus, Devoted Wife and Mother. Adonai has blessed us with two Amazingly Wonderful Sons. We have had the privilege of being Place of Safety parents for 1 1/2 years and there after foster parents to a Darling Princess for 5 years. She was reconciled with her biological parents in Dec'14. Our hearts are still aching from the loss, but we know that as we trust Adonai with our salvation, so we can trust Him with her future. We welcomed our new 4 year old foster child on 05JUN'15.
