About Helouise Steenkamp

I'm a 45 plus, Devoted Wife and Mother. Adonai has blessed us with two Amazingly Wonderful Sons. We have had the privilege of being Place of Safety parents for 1 1/2 years and there after foster parents to a Darling Princess for 5 years. She was reconciled with her biological parents in Dec'14. Our hearts are still aching from the loss, but we know that as we trust Adonai with our salvation, so we can trust Him with her future. We welcomed our new 4 year old foster child on 05JUN'15.

  12. Rachel says:

Hello, me and my husband saw a post by a friend a few months ago, calling for people to consider fostering, because of the need that exists. We looked into it, and realised we had the love and ample means to help.

We approached child welfare, and completed the screening process and training, and were approved a little over a month ago. We indicated that initially we would prefer same race children, but would take any age, boys or girls, multiple siblings, special needs, etc. We have been told by welfare that we should be prepared to wait a very long time for a white foster placement.

Our question is, does it matter which organisation you register with as a foster parent/place of safety? What is the difference between registering at CSC or at child welfare? Now that we have already registered, is it best to wait, or would you recommend approaching CSC? We are in the Johannesburg area.

Thank you for a great site! :-)

    • There is definitely a diffrence in the organisation you make use of. The CSC aims to place children with foster parents of the same race and Culture. You need not wait a long period for the type of placement you specified. My advice would be to contact your closest CSC as soon as possible. Feedback: We approached CSC and Welfare in Sep, but both have said once you are registered with one organisation, you may not move to, or deal with another organisation, and it is best to wait. We are still patiently awaiting placement after 3 months. Many thanks. :-)

hi am kholofelo 4rm nellmapius am 22 of age n pregnant i would like to place my baby in foster care 4 1 year 6 months

    • I have great sympathy for your situation.
Unfortunately you will only be able to apply for Foster Care of your baby ones he/she has been born. You will have to report your situation to a Social Worker after giving birth. They will then investigate your circumstances and report it to the children’s court. The children’s court then has to find the baby in need, before ordering him/her to be placed in foster Care. The court will also determine/rule on the period of time the baby is to be placed in foster Care. It is a very complex system.
You can however contact a Social Worker in the mean time to discuss alternative care options with.
May you be able to do what is in the best interest of your child. Take care.

    • Contact your closest CSC or Welfare offices and make an appointment with a Social Worker, to discuss the situation with her. She will be able to give you the best advice in your specific situation.

      • Heather says:

        Pearl,

I am sure that by now baby is born, if you are still wondering.
Adoption can be something you decide on before the birth, once baby is born, you sign a document at court stating this is what you want to do. You then have 30 days to make sure it is what you want. Until baby is born, there is no “physical” baby with a name & birth certificate that they can work with, but all social workers will assist you with the understanding of the decision & process of both before baby is born to allow you to make the best informed decision you can. For both you & your baby.

Contact your nearest social worker to walk you through the process if it is still something you are considering & it is not yet done. They are really helpful.

      • Good day. Thank you for you post. Just so that subscribers know, I always answer such personal requests directly via personal e-mail.

    • I am sorry to hear about your situation. There are no cost involved when you give your child up for adoption or placed in foster care. May the Lord guide you as to the path you have to choose.

    Hi.

My husband would like to adopt my biological son. I have not had contact with my son’s father in the last 4 years. Can the CSC assist in the adoption process as I am aware that a social worker is needed in the process?

    Thank you.

    • Warren says:

      Hey Christi.

If you scroll to the top of this page you will find a list of CSC offices. One should be in your area, otherwise contact one of the offices and ask them for their nearest branch.

Fostering is a special commitment. I am a single parent to 2 beautiful boys placed in my care by the state. I can tell you that it has changed my life hectically and in a wonderful way, however its a decision you need to not take lightly as the commitment is huge.

      All the best

    • Hi Christi. There’s also a Foster Care Information Pamphlet on the information page of this blog.  Sent from my BlackBerry

My sister’s past away when I was young she left her child and the aunt of the child decided to foster him, now the child is 12years old and Aunt tell me she is no longer want to stay with the child and Im not working what should I do cause the child is now staying with me.She did not change the foster grant I think she still earning it.

    • You must urgently contact the Social Worker involved with his placement, or at least the institution that dealt with his placement with your aunt, and notify them of the situation.

They will be able to advice you as to the best course of action to take, and investigate the matter of the grant payment. May you be guided with wisdom.

    Hi Helouise
Do you know if the CSC will allow for weekend Fostering. I have a friend with a 2 yr old son and they are not able to have more kids and are desperately wanting to weekend Foster. Who do we speak to or what process do we follow?
    Many thanks
    Celeste

    Good morning,

My husband (Dirk) and I are interested in the procedure of foster care.

We have a son of 10 years old and we have found ourselves in a very fortunate position to be able to offer support and love to another child.

Unfortunately we are unable to have another child and find ourselves in looking to give a child in need a place to call home.

Please if anyone knows what the procedure is or where I can go please can you email me.

We live in durban sa. My fax no is 0317019121.

    Thank you

    Sally

    Good afternoon,

I am a single woman, 36 years old. I have a good job and my own home. I love children and would love the opportunity to forster a child. Is it possible that single people can forster a child. I live in Moreleta Park in Pretoria.

  28. Good Afternoon Elize.

This site is NOT a foster agency. I can only give you the information I have on hand, and that I have followed to become a foster parent. Attached find the information booklet on that should answer most of your questions. It is also linked on our information page. Good luck on your foster care journey.

I’m sitting with a very difficult situation and I’m not too sure who to speak to, 1) to protect myself and 2) to protect the family involved.

I am a unmarried male who has been actively involved in children’s ministry for the past 12 years and I have built fantastic relationships with many of the kids I work with. My steady girlfriend is a speech therapist at a deaf school and partners with me in many of my children’s ministry related events.

Recently one of the boys I mentor’s family was given notice and evicted from a local caravan park, and so the unmarried mother and two sons are staying with friends until the end of this week. Because of our relationship with one of the boys, the mom asked to meet my girlfriend and I last night to ask my girlfriend to take these 2 boys in and look after them until she is on her feet again. My girlfriend and I don’t live together, but do stay close to each other and, with both of us having such a heart for these kids, we have accepted both excitedly and nervously. We both have a heart for kids and there is a lot of stability within our relationship – we feel that we could easily offer a suitable solid family environment without me “living there”

However I do realise there is a legal aspect to this whole thing. If the mom asks us to look after her kids for a month or two, with the help of our local church, and these help of the school, can we just take these kids in, or do we have to send them to social welfare?
What would social welfare say about us not being married or living together?

    • My serious advice to you both will be to not take the children in, before getting the proper approval and guidance from your local social welfare council (A detailed list of the Christian Social Council offices in S.A. appears on the information page of this blog). The reasons being to protect both yourselves, the children and the parents. Helping children is also my biggest passion, but sometimes in our eagerness and zeal we are unable to see the whole picture in perspective. PLEASE equip yourself properly before embarking on this huge adventure.

Thank you so much for responding so soon. I live in the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town, and I have already tried contacting both Wynberg and Goodwood branches – neither of the numbers you have exist. I actually wanted to set up an appointment to see someone at Wynberg for guidance, but I have no idea how to contact them now. That number you have is incorrect.

      • I’m sorry, but this is the only number I have for Wynberg: (021) 761-2371/2; and Goodwood: (021) 592-2783. Their Head Office in Pretoria’s number is (012) 344-1291/2 – e-mail: kinders@cmrn.co.za.

    • Mama says:

I think they must let you two have the children because all they need is Love and a home, I don’t see any problem if you not married yet because the married people fail the kids.
      Good Luck

    • Dear Zelan. I will NEVER judge you! You are trying to give your child the best chance in life. Yes babies as young as a day old, can be placed in Foster Care. If you contact the CSC Offices closest to you, you can make an appointment with a Social Worker who will be able to assist and advice you, WITHOUT having to make a decision right away. Take care and lots of best wishes for both you and your unborn baby!

I would like to know about foster care. I am a struggling married woman who has been struggling to find a job. My husband is also unemployed, we have two daughters aged 13 and 6. The one is in high school the other in grade 1. With the help of some friends and extended family we have managed to come this far but it has been hard. my daughter has been able to continue schooling because we received exemption from paying school fees,we had to move back to a place far away from school because we can’t afford rent and the way things are it looks like we are going to have a hard time to take our kids to school and providing for them. So many times we have considered to go to joburg or cape town to look for a job but because we have kids itls hard to just go. Without leaving them in a stable place. Please help me with informatio to find out if its possible to find a foster home for an agreed period until our financial situation. The 13 year old one is a very bright and hardworking child. She has always been an A student and even now in GRADE 8 SHE CONTINUES TO BE IN THE A CLASS WHO MOSTLY GET MORE THAN 90% IN HER TESTS. SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH A LOT AS SHE UNDERSTANDS OUR STRUGGLES BUT HAS REMAINED ON TOP.I’m AFRAID THAT SUCH A BRIGHT CHILD WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE WILL ONE DAY HAVE TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL BECAUSE HER PARENTS COULDN’T PROVIDE FOR HER
